Markian Kaczaj

Owner/Coach

I opened CrossFit 580 in June 2010 as I passionately believe in the life-improving benefits of functional fitness excellence and the teachings of the CrossFit Methodology.

Beginning at a young age, I have been involved with competitive team sports such as soccer, swimming and martial arts. After suffering recent years of training set backs due to knee and back surgeries to correct athletic injuries, I discovered CrossFit in the Spring of 2008 at CrossFit Pleasanton. I was instantly hooked! Following several months of training focusing on mechanics and consistency, I was able to introduce and scale significant loads while increasing my work capacities. After my rehabilitation was complete, I realized the full benefits of functional training and proper Paleo nutrition as an integral component in my fitness rehabilitation. From that point on, I never looked back to conventional methods of fitness-isolation movements and corporate “globo-gyms”.

My goal as owner and head fitness coach at CrossFit 580 is to inspire individuals to make long-term lifestyle fitness and nutritional improvements. CrossFit's short, scalable workouts and commitment to functional movement and nutrition, makes it the perfect program for individuals of all ages and abilities.

I believe that the psychology, competitiveness, and camaraderie of sport and fitness training plays a vital role in the success of any program. The coaches at CrossFit 580 share a common ideology of fostering a positive training environment to help our growing community of fitness achieve and maintain fitness excellence. We look forward to partnering with you.

My journey in fitness started like many other people, working out at global gyms with less than desirable results. After watching the movie 300, I discovered that many of the actors (all in phenomenal shape) had obtained training in CrossFit. This made me curious and I was determined to learn as much as I could from everything and everyone around me that had something to do with CrossFit. I did CrossFit workouts at home and at gyms, however, I was seeking more knowledge and experience, and my search for a CrossFit community affiliate began.

In the fall of 2010, I found the place that changed my life...CrossFit 580. I attended their “Fight Gone Bad Fundraiser” and I was instantly hooked. From that point on, I was at the box as much as possible learning from the great staff of coaches and helping grow the wonderful CF580 fitness community. My goal was to gain excellence in all the ten fitness aspects of CrossFit and begin sharing that with others. While training at CF580, my passion for CrossFit continued to evolve, and I quickly realized that I truly enjoyed motivating and inspiring others to help them attain their fitness and life goals. From this point on, I knew I wanted to teach and spread the CrossFit methodology to as many people as possible, so I attended the CrossFit Level 1 Certification in May 2011.

The bottom line is, CROSSFIT WORKS AND IT WILL GET YOU IN THE BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE! CrossFit and CrossFit 580 have an unbelievable community of people that I am fortunate enough to surround myself with. They are the kind of people who inspire you, who want to help you, along with the ones who you can learn from in many different ways. They are ordinary people like you and I achieving extra ordinary results. My personal favorites are the people who train right beside me at CrossFit 580. The ones I share great moments with, smile with, sweat with, the ones who, even if they say "they can't", they still try their hardest, the ones who push it to the limits day in and day out... and they still come back for more.

I grew up playing basketball and soccer in Minnesota and continued to play collegiate soccer at Hamilton College. Throughout high school and college I was able to maintain a high level of fitness from playing soccer and basketball and spending countless hours in the gym. Although I was able to stay in good shape and perform well, it was tough to get motivated to go to the gym sometimes due to the repetitiveness of the strength program I used (lots of bench press, long runs, and bicep curls!).

Just after I graduated college, I was introduced to CrossFit and it totally blew me away! I never thought that I would find a program that not only was constantly varied to keep my body guessing, but also allowed myself to develop tremendous amounts of strength, power, and endurance. It’s safe to say that after a couple weeks, I was completely hooked! I moved out to Livermore, CA in November and have been training with Mark, Joy, and Tyler and have enjoyed the programming and community at CrossFit 580. Maybe I had been drinking a bit too much of the CrossFit “Kool-Aid”, but I recently decided that I wanted to become a trainer in order to share with others the most effective fitness program around. My goal as a trainer is to motivate and push others to not only meet their own personal fitness goals, but also excel in all facets of health and athletic performance.

CrossFit Level 1 Certified Instructor. April 2011

I have been interested in fitness since I was in elementary school. My earliest workouts involved a lot of Jane Fonda videos and sweating it out to my Flashdance soundtrack LP. My mother was always taking me to the gym with her and we were well acquainted with the good ole Nautilus machines and step aerobic classes. I grew up dabbling in various activites such as ballet, gymnastics, soccer and softball. If you would have asked my what my "sport" was in high school, my answer would have been socializing! Serving four years active duty in the United States Air Force it was part of my duty to stay in decent shape. There is a strong history of obesity, diabetes and heart disease in my family. After having children and dealing with my weight and fitness levels fluctuating, I knew I had to get serious about my fitness goals. As a nurse, I see what people with these health issues have to deal with and I knew I wanted no part of that. I became serious about eating clean and got into weightlifting. After a few years I ventured into sprint distance triathlon and distance running. I even spent a year training in Krav Maga. I truly loved endurance sports, but was dismayed about the strength I had lost. After getting back into the globogym scene I quickly became bored. I needed something that was challenging, not boring, and that would give me the results I was looking for. I am always looking to be faster, stronger, leaner, and just all around more
fit. CrossFit has the perfect formula for my needs.

One day I wandered into CrossFit 580, met Mark and Joy, and have been hooked since Day 1!  I believe CrossFit is hands down the best fitness regimen ever! For a couple of years I contemplatedbecoming a personal trainer or group exercise instructor. I just couldn't decide which. After falling in love with CrossFit, I knew coaching at CrossFit 580 was exactly what I wanted to do. Now I can continue working on my personal fitness goals and helping people in my community acheive theirs. Taking care of ill and injured people for a living motivates me to help others attain a level of wellness/independence that should keep them fit, happy, and out of a hospital gown.

Coach

My introduction to CrossFit came at a time when I was looking for a lot of answers.  I was a competitive athlete through college (Figure Skating, Volleyball, Rugby at Boston College) and found myself less than motivated to maintain fitness in adult life with the options I thought I had.  In addition, I was struggling with chronic back pain from a past athletic injury and the pain was taking its toll on me in many ways.  I worked as a pharmacist at a retail chain where I had to stand 40 hours a week and my job was becoming hell.   I’ve been on my share of pain meds, but I knew enough as a pharmacist that I needed a different solution…and quick.   Cue military friend bringing me to CrossFit - it took me one workout to know I had found the answer.  I instantly felt part of a team of cool people who were also saying, “I want to live a better life.”  At six months, I ran my first half-marathon.  After two years of CrossFit training and adherence to the Paleo diet I am back pain free.

I have an extensive background in medicine that can assist in coaching through the “transition phase” of changing daily habits, particularly for people tackling chronic health problems.  Please seek me out if you would like specialized attention for chronic pain, diabetes, obesity, depression, or other conditions.

I am also attracted to the competitive aspect of this sport.  Fostering proper technique and aspiration to achieve “Personal Record” are at the core of my coaching philosophy.   I am involved with the Crossfit Games as medical support and enjoy studying aspects of elite performance.

Mark Lind aka "Marky Mark"

Coach

Coach Mark began his focused fitness journey at age seven in a competitive foot race around Lake Merritt by his father's side. Mark continued his quest for fitness in high school XC and Track. While experiencing some success through his sophomore year, his body began to fill out, and he switched to wrestling and power lifting to finish out high school. After graduating, Mark, basically, just did a lot of bench press!

In his early 20's, Mark found himself at a crossroads with two job offers: corporate information technology and corporate "Fitness Trainer" (then, at 24 Hour Nautilus). The money won out, and Mark followed the road into information technology. However, he continued to keep pace with current research on fitness and nutrition, and he trained many of his friends and family on the side.

In 2007, after a shoulder reconstruction to repair typical globo-gym trauma, Mark began to explore new methods of training, and by chance he found a local CrossFit gym (Diablo CrossFit) right near his office.

Mark worked for two years as a Trainer/Coach at Diablo CrossFit beginning in June 2008. He has coached people in both one-on-one personal training sessions, as well as in classroom environments. He also ran a small Olympic Weightlifting Bootcamp in winter 2009. Above all, Mark's passion is to share his knowledge with the enthusiastic community of CrossFitters dedicated to fitness, health and each other.

Mark is a CrossFit Certified Level 1 Trainer (6/28/08), CrossFit Kids Certified Trainer (8/30/08), CrossFit Endurance Certified Trainer (2/28/10), CrossFit Movement and Mobility Certified (8/14/10), CrossFit Olympic Weightlifting Certified (4/12/10) and CrossFit Football Certified (8/29/10).

Mark is also certified by USA Weightlifting as an Olympic Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach (6/28/09). He is also credentialed by the National Strength & Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS-2/26/10).
